Tip: the shaded squares on the diagonal are the square numbers (1, 4, 9, 16 and so on).
How to read the chart
Find the first number along the left side and the second number along the top. The square where the row and column meet shows the answer. For example, to find 6 × 8, go to row 6 and column 8: the answer is 48. Because 8 × 6 gives the same answer, you will find 48 in two places.
Patterns to look for
- The chart is a mirror. It looks the same on both sides of the diagonal, because the order of the numbers does not change the answer.
- The 5s end in 0 or 5, and the 10s always end in 0.
- The 2s, 4s, 6s and 8s are all even.
- The 9s have digits that add up to 9 (18, 27, 36, 45 and so on).
- The diagonal shows square numbers such as 25 (5 × 5) and 49 (7 × 7).
Ideas for using it at home or in class
- Print one copy and cover half the squares with sticky notes, then ask your child to work out the hidden answers.
- Colour all the multiples of one number (for example 3) and talk about what pattern appears.
- Use it as a reference while doing homework, then gradually stop looking as the facts stick.
- Pair it with the times table practice quiz to check what has been learned.
