Why puzzle games are worth a few minutes
Puzzle games ask children to slow down, look at the whole board and think a step or two ahead. Sudoku and Tic Tac Toe are good first choices because the rules are short, while Four in a Line and Bubble Shooter add planning and aiming.
A good way to use this category is to start with the easiest game, play a few rounds together, and talk about why a move worked or failed. Children who explain their thinking out loud usually get more out of a puzzle than children who simply play faster.
